Movie Conventions: Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)
In Jumanji: The Next Level, the film uses many establishing shots to exhibit the scenery and also provide some context to the audience about the characters before they are transported into the game of Jumanji. We can see tilts and pans of the camera as the angle changes to capture all the separate characters. It can also help analyze a certain place by breaking it down into smaller objects. These objects could be a structure, mountain, or bridge that bring the location together. This builds on the theme that these characters have different traits and personalities, but must function together as one for their own good. Many reverse shots show the dialogue throughout the characters.
In the beginning of the movie, we can see modern casual clothing, such as t-shirts, jeans, and jackets. These costumes are standard for the age of the characters and the time being set to the present day. However, once the characters are transported to the game of Jumanji, they take on rugged and outdoor clothing. The lighting after the characters travel to the video game universe is natural, using the broad sunlight and bright weather to illuminate the set. The characters act friendly and often crack jokes at each other. The props in the movie can range from technology in the present day to tools such as hatchets and machetes. This is mostly because setting drastically changes from a standard neighborhood in a city in the present day, to the depths of the jungles, to the desert, and frosty mountains.
The score of the film creates a dramatic contrast to the scenery and captivates the audience. One possible instance of a sound motif is the console which runs the game Jumanji. It creates the same familiar noise that begins the game and can also be seen in the prequel. There are many instances of ambient sounds within the films own diegetic sounds. For example, the water flowing and animals moving in the jungle to the stampede in the desert.
The film uses basic editing, as most of the adventure of the film is conveyed from the different settings and the camera angles, movements and shots discussed earlier. As result simple cuts and jump cuts are the most common edits.
